Leader of Majority in the National Assembly Aden Duale today chaired a crisis meeting of North Eastern leaders following withdrawal of teachers from the region due to insecurity.
The meeting which took place in Nairobi was attended by three Governors, MPs and Senators from Garissa, Mandera and Wajir counties.
Also on the table for discussion during the meeting was the 2019 census figures which leaders had contested.
Today’s crisis meeting comes a day after the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) transferred all non-local teachers in Garissa County following targeted terror attacks by suspected Al-shabaab in the North Eastern region.
The leaders condemned the move and challenged the Governnent to restore security as an urgent matter to address education crisis.
Over 500 teachers from North Eastern had on Monday camped at the TSC headquarters in Nairobi seeking an audience with commission’s boss Nancy Macharia saying their lives are at risk due to frequent terror attacks.
TSC Head of Corporate Communications Beatrice Wababu in respond to protests by teachers confirmed all teachers working in Garrisa have since been issued with transfer letters to new stations.
Ms. Wababu also called non-local teachers based in Mandera and Wajir to visit TSC offices at their original counties for further direction. This is an indication all non-local teachers working in North Eastern region will be transfered.
The TSC’s decision has alarmed leaders and education stakeholders from the region who were forced to hold a crisis security meeting in Nairobi.
