Wajir High School retains 24 local teachers, weathering storm of TSC transfers

The recent decision by Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to withdraw teachers from Northern region caused unprecedented crisis in education sector.

Schools in NEP region have as a result been paralysed with learning being compromised due to inadequate teachers.

Wajir High School for example which is a national school and mother of all NEP schools in the region, is the only school that has 24 local TSC teachers, seven local teachers employed by Board of Management who are from university, four non- local TSC teachers and one non-local employed by BOM.

The key rationale behind the success of Wajir High School is it’s decision to motivate and retain teachers with a strong board of Management. The school board decided not to employ non-local teachers after the last time that saw mass exodus of teachers after TSC removed all non-local teachers from NEP Region. However it’s former non-local teachers have remained in school.

The Board also guarantees security of the non-local teachers with the help of the School principal Mr Adan Kasim Farah who confirmed that the school has a good number of Kenya police reservist who provide security at night. The Principal added “In Wajir High School the security for the non-local teachers is guaranteed and i thank the security team from Wajir County for the good work”.

Mr Adan Kasim Farah Congratulated the non-local teachers who remained in the school. The non-local teachers are very cooperative and have an open heart for Wajir High School as well as liking the community that surround the school, the principal added.

Mr Adan Kasim Farah further said the non-local teachers in the school have showed maximum respect to the school stakeholders and the school board of Management also reciprocates the same to them.

The boy who scored grade A- and was the best in the County in 2019 KCSE results is currently teaching in the school being part of the seven teachers that the BOM has employed.

The Principal said the boy is good and can teach very well in his former school.

Mr Adan Kasim Farah futher noted the local teachers come out boldly and show patriotism to the County and the Nation at large by sacrificing a lot of time in the school compound as well as teaching more lessons like 32 in a week with every teacher able to teach eight lessons a day. The Principal termed that as a sacrifice.

Mr Adan Kasim Farah also noted that terrorism was a global threat not only to Wajir and confirmed that despite such challenges the County is a peaceful place.

Wajir high school is a national school and one of the best schools in NEP Region. Currently it has 841 students spread in four streams in each class.

At the entrance of the school you will see serious development structures starting from the tarmac road from General hospital to the school’s main administration block. The tarmac road was built by the National Government while the school’s borehole was drilled by the Northern Water Board Service which is now complete and soon will be commissioned. A new dometory and classrooms were also completed successfully.

The new structural development was done under the courtesy of the school Principal Mr Adan Kasim Farah who is proud of the school achievements.

The school started to fence it’s compound with a wall which was however stopped for some time due to financial constrains. The principal however said the great wall of the school will soon be constructed and urges all boys of the school to contribute towards the cause and asked for the same from National Government, NGos, the county Government and well wishers to facilitate the implementation of the great wall project to protect the land of the school from land grabbers and also ensure security is guaranteed.

Mr Adan Kasim Farah the long serving teacher with 32 years of service is optimistic that the school will lead again in the county in 2020 KCSE and produce best results.
