Sen. Kabreta challenges two House committees to probe police brutality, power blackout in Wajir County

Wajir Senator Dr Abdullahi Ibrahim Ali has petitioned two Standing Committees of the Senate demanding statements explaining police brutality and power blackout.

The Senator commonly referred to as Kabreta wants a statement from Chairperson Standing Committee on National Security, Defence and foreign relations regarding Police Brutality meted on innocent citizens in Bute and Biyamadow in Wajir County on Thursday May 7, 2020 and Tuesday May 5, 2020 respectively.

The second statement is from Chairperson Standing Committee on Energy regarding constant blackout in Wajir County

In the statement from the Standing Committee on Interior and Coordination of National Government he wants respond on the following issues –

1. Why did the police use live bullets on peaceful demonstrations in Bute, Wajir North Constituency in violation of code of conduct?
“As we speak the victim of this inhuman act, Abdifatah Hassan Dekow is nursing wounds at Coptic hospital, the same incident also happened at Biyamadow, Wajir South Constituency where Ahmed Shale Hussein was assaulted. by police according to the medical examination report”, the Senator explains in his request for a statement.

2. The unnecessary erection of four police barriers within 40 Kilometers between Watiti and Danaba Wajir North Constituency?

At this said area, Kabreta notes the police have been engaging in extortion actions demanding bribes from shopkeepers, Boda Boda riders as well as from matatu operators who ferry milk into the town.

3. Explain necessary actions taken in regards to these two incidences by the national police service under the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government and Independent police oversight Authority.

And in the event of such actions in the future, the ministry should tell us what plans and action are in place to prevent police brutality?

“Mr. Speaker, Sir,
I rise, pursuant to Standing Order 48 (1), to seek a Statement from the Chairperson Standing Committee on Energy regarding constant blackout in Wajir County from 2017 to Date”, Senator Kabreta writes seeking the second statement.

In the request to the Committee he wants it to respond to three issues;

1. Why is the machine from Garissa not been operational since it was brought last year and thus lying idol?

There is another machine that is not functional but the spares are available in Wajir thus require ministry staff to repair, the Senator adds.

2. Wajir County demand for power is nearly 3MW currently, three machines are functional and they supply around 2MW what is the ministry doing on Wajir County demanded additional 1MW?

3. Explain necessary actions taken in regards to repair and maintenance of machines stationed at Wajir County and plans in place to upgrade the power planet From supplying 2MW to 3MW and when is the ministry planning to repair and install the ex Garissa Machine?
